Therapy Success Story: Kelly Kennedy’s Journey

May 2, 2025
At Saybrook Landing, we believe in the power of hope, healing, and the human spirit—and Kelly Kennedy is living proof of just how far determination and skilled care can go.

Kelly came to us at one of the lowest points of her life. After already enduring the trauma of a serious car accident, she found herself hospitalized again—this time with no idea why she felt so sick. The answer would come: West Nile Virus, likely contracted during a peaceful kayak outing, doing what she loved. The virus took a severe toll on her body. She was placed on a ventilator, received a tracheostomy, and required a feeding tube just to meet her basic nutritional needs. Her parents clung to hope, minute by minute, praying for even the smallest signs of recovery.

But Kelly—petite in stature, mighty in will—refused to let these circumstances define her.

With each passing day, she worked tirelessly with our incredible therapy team, pushing her body and mind to rebuild what was lost. From learning how to breathe independently again, to mastering the ability to chew and swallow, to regaining strength in her legs—Kelly gave everything she had. And of course, a few celebratory SpongeBob popsicles along the way didn’t hurt!

Milestone after milestone, Kelly rose. The ventilator was no longer needed. Then the trach was removed. Next, she conquered oral nutrition and the tube came out. Finally, using a walker and the support of those who believed in her, she walked again.

She even began going home for short visits, gaining confidence not only in her steps, but in herself. And then—the bittersweet day came—Kelly discharged home, strong and breathing on her own, after three months of intense rehab and unwavering courage.

Her family’s gratitude speaks volumes. Kelly’s mother shared:

“Our daughter Kelly Kennedy was brought in 3 months ago with a severe case of West Nile Virus. Upon entering the facility, she was completely bedridden. The staff worked right away helping her recover. Every day she got better. The entire staff was so helpful, wonderful, and she is going home with No Tube or breathing machine. She has gotten so much better with Saybrook Landing’s tender love and care.”

Kelly, we are so proud of the progress you made and the strength you showed. You are an inspiration to us all. Thank you, Kelly and Karen, for trusting Saybrook Landing with your care. We wish you a summer full of sunshine, freedom—and of course, SpongeBob popsicles.
